I’ve also started Death’s Door which is a Zelda like game with a cool little crow buddy reaping souls! Its great, though I think the combat could be tuned a little better, or just drop the difficulty. I just hope there is a reevaluation that considers melding some of the older zelda designs back into the new game( dungeons, more tools, more unique bosses, and please please get rid of the breaking weapons).

They’re obviously sticking with the open world for BOTW2 and I think that innovation is BOTW’s strongest and best change.

I think you have to be careful to call into question the critical response to any game (I’ve always stood by the motto that the games you praise is not as good as you think they are, and the games you dislike are not as bad as you think they are), but I wonder how much of the overwhelming praise for this game came from the fact that its such a surprising departure for the Zelda franchise. I think I saw someone else up thread say it, but this is a good game but a bad Zelda game, and I think for me that’s where I’m at with it. Like I said, overall I’ve enjoyed most of my time with the game, the world is beautiful and exploration is very enjoyable, despite the reward always being “another shrine”. I also miss dungeons, and while the shrine puzzles are entertaining, there are too many of them (especially when quite a few are just combat trials or rewards for quests) and while at first I enjoyed the aesthetic, the fact that its the only one for all 120 shrines is just a bizarre choice, especially since after a while it starts to feel rather stale. I miss the wider variety of tools from earlier Zelda games. The combat in general is very hit or miss for me too, and the ganon fights in the divine beasts are dull. It really kills the mood to obtain an awesome weapon only to know that if you use it on those bokoblins, you’re wasting it. I don’t think many people have much love for the breaking weapons, and I think its one of the major missteps of the game. I’ve enjoyed most of my time with it, especially in the early hours, but the flaws present just became more glaring as I continued to play. I was feeling a little burnt out on it, and in general I’ve been having some mixed feelings on this game. I’ve been playing a lot of Breath of the Wild, but had to take a break before heading towards the 4th divine beast in Gerudo Desert.

That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped gaming, but my focus has shifted and I’ve been playing a lot more games off of Game Pass and surprisingly taking full advantage of my long neglected WII U. I may return in the future, just because my love for the Souls games will most likely draw me back, and it doesn’t appear that there are many other legitimate places to play those games on pc.

It was this thing hanging there tempting me with FOMO and big sales on games I was never going to play, plus a daunting backlog that was practically paralyzing. I kind of took a breather from games media for a while, and part of that was “gasp!” deleting my Steam account. It’s been a while since I’ve written anything here.
